The Nutcracker, A Modern Ballet
Sky-Marie McDonald's magical interpretation of The Nutcracker enters it's third year of building the beloved winter tradition in Brookings, Oregon with four performances. This year the show features all new lighting and a new venue with tiered seating. Invited professional guest dancers and our local dance students will take you on a colorful journey to the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in a show filled with drama and magic.
This year's production is set in the Azalea Middle School Gym, in the heart of Brookings. We open with a 2 pm performance Saturday, December 9, which will let you out in time for the Coastal Christmas Elves' Parade. Our second performance is after the parade at 7 pm. Don't forget to take in Nature's Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights in Azalea Park, as well, while you are here on the coast, as well.
In 2017, 12 year old Korinne Luis steps into her second lead role, now as The Nutcracker. Building on her nine years of dance and her performance this spring as The Velveteen Rabbit, Korinne is on her way to fulfilling her dream of joining the San Francisco Ballet.
Meriwether McDonald-Schell, age 11, is excited to be dancing the lead role of Clara this year. Meriwether has grown up on the stage and began dancing as soon as she could walk. This will be her 6th consecutive year of dancing in the Nutcracker. "Clara" is a dream role for Meriwether and a rite of passage for young aspiring ballerinas.
Eight year old Claire Pieper, in her third year of dance, takes on the role of Clara's petulant younger sister, Frances.
The student cast is rounded out with Grace Norman, 13, as the Snow Queen; Daisha Nidiffer, 12, as the Chinese Queen; 15 year old Sierra Rose as the Spanish Queen.
Professional cast members include Artistic Director Sky-Marie McDonald as the Rat Queen, invited guest dancer Anastasia Myers as the Arabian Peacock, and a special mystery guest dancer as the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The event is brought to you by Wild Rivers Conservatory of Dance with financial sponsorship by the 501(c)(3) non-profit Wild Rivers Coast Foundation for Dance and numerous community sponsors.
